{"id":733,"date":"2012-11-26T06:40:21","date_gmt":"2012-11-26T01:10:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/asap-asia.org\/blog\/?p=733"},"modified":"2013-03-13T11:00:16","modified_gmt":"2013-03-13T05:30:16","slug":"response-of-irish-government-to-our-letter-regarding-the-death-of-savita-halappanavar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/asap-asia.org\/blog\/response-of-irish-government-to-our-letter-regarding-the-death-of-savita-halappanavar\/","title":{"rendered":"Response of Irish Government To Our Letter Regarding The Death of Savita Halappanavar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>On November 20, ASAP signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/asap-asia.org\/blog\/700\/\">International Campaign&#8217;s Petition Letter <\/a>to protest the death of Savita Halappanavar, and sent it to the Irish Government by email.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We received the following response on Nov. 21.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From:\u00a0Doreen Foley PA to\u00a0Eamon Gilmore TD,\u00a0Tanaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs &amp; Trade<br \/>\nTo : ASAP<\/p>\n<p>Thank you very much for your email with regard to the case of Savita Halappanavar. \u00a0 I will bring your correspondence to the attention of the Tanaiste.<\/p>\n<p>This matter was raised with the Tanaiste at Leaders Questions in the Dail last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>He said &#8220;I want to take this opportunity to express my own deepest sympathy to the family of Savita Halappanavar. \u00a0This is an appalling loss, which I think has rightly touched the hearts of all of the Irish people. \u00a0It is, of course, true to say that we do not yet know the full circumstances of what happened, but anybody who listened to Savita&#8217;s husband\u00a0\u00a0yesterday has to be deeply concerned by his very dignified and moving account of what happened to Savita.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of those issues where we are all reminded of our duty as legislators. \u00a0It is not a moment for shrill voices. \u00a0It is a moment for respect, first of all, for a grieving\u00a0\u00a0family, for dignified discussion and for determined action.<\/p>\n<p>I do not think we, as a country, should allow a situation where women\u2019s lives are put at risk in this way. \u00a0We must deal with the issue and bring legal clarity to it\u2026.
