But even in 2016 this day continues to be relevant despite so many successes that women have had in the recent generations. Women are increasingly at the frontlines of global turmoil, whether it be the refugee crisis, migrant workers, dealing with natural disasters and even involved with non- state armies and terrorism. Women still do not get equal pay for equal work, even in countries like UK and USA. Women are under –represented in most of the arms of the government and policy making forums and gender issues are still considered to be a low priority in most of our countries.

What we want to ask in the midst of all this is : Can a woman ever be free unless she can control her own body ?

Abortions are a part of the reproductive life of any woman and it is discrimination when half the citizens of a country are denied their rights to life and dignity and benefit from scientific progress.

We call upon our governments on this day to recognize that women have needed to and have had abortions for longer than these world famous monuments exist ! It is time to recognize this as a woman’s right and save their lives which are more precious that any pile of stones and mortar……
