Naureen1Women’s own wishes become submissive around the wishes of other people who are associated with her when it comes to pregnancy. In early years when there was no awareness about safe post abortion care, women have suffered a lot by going to ‘back street’ and untrained persons. Today also because of the strong stigma attached to the very term abortion, women continue to suffer. Almost everyone in Pakistan uses some kind of media including reading newspaper, listening radio, watching news and/or active on social media website to remain connected to the world and keep themselves updated. The stuff we find on all these media is somehow the translation of the perceptions of people from media into news, papers, pictures and laws. Hence, media is an influencing body that gives people information for making decisions related to their health, family, education, business, friends etc. Media plays the role of a catalyst in our society and has a great impact on the decision making process.Regrettably, there is a serious lack of awareness among the media personnel about the law pertaining to safe abortion in Pakistan. Therefore each time they make some news they term it as illegal, crime and sinful. This gives a negative image of the issue to the people around and they disregard the importance of women’s right of access to safe services.

Media could play a positive role in improving the life of the people by disseminating the accurate and sensitive information to save the life of the woman instead of only highlighting those individuals who are untrained and are not meeting the quality standards. On contrary, they must highlight those individuals and/or facilities, which are providing safe services to the clients. It is also the responsibility to both–the media personnel and the healthcare providers– to promote the uptake of family planning methods in order for couples to save themselves from unwanted pregnancies, which would ultimately decrease the number of abortion seekers.

The media must form a bridge between common people and the law as well as trained healthcare providers so that people could have easy safe and affordable access in case of need.
