The Asia Safe Abortion Partnership seeks a Program and Communication Officer to join their dynamic team!

logoASAP is a regional network in Asia advocating for women’s right to safe abortions. We provide a forum for experience sharing, learning and advocacy for our members. Our membership includes activists, advocates, lawyers, doctors, programme persons, students, journalists and others working towards this goal. We have members across 15 countries in South Asia, South East and Central Asia, and the Middle East.

About the Position
The Program and Communication Officer will work collaboratively with the staff team at the ASAP Secretariat. A particular focus of this position will be managing the social media and other communication platforms of the network. In addition, the PCO will also contribute as required to the program planning, implementation and mentoring.
Specific roles and responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the flow of communication within ASAP as well as on public and social networking platforms to inform others about the work of ASAP.
  • Internal communication responsibilities will include maintaining regular contact among ASAP Secretariat, Steering Committee members and country members, sharing important news, events, announcements and other matters related to safe abortion issues in Asia.
  • External communication responsibilities will include maintaining updates on the social networking platforms and website ( curating and creating content) as per plan as well as creating and disseminating reports of ASAP work to partners, donors and others
  • Maintenance and updating of a database of membership and other ongoing advocacy activities such as the International Campaign.
  • Manage the website in collaboration with Web Manager
  • Maintain current knowledge of trends in reproductive health and rights. Research new trends in abortion and contraceptive policies and health care practices.
  • Contribute to the planning, implementation and reporting of ongoing programmes and activities.
  • Provide mentoring support to youth members as part of the staff team

The Program and Communication Officer’s responsibilities involve working with a broad array of collaborators, including grantees, donors, partners working in related areas.
Ideally, the PCO will possess knowledge of policy and technical issues and have an understanding of the trajectories and regional perspectives of the reproductive rights and pro- choice movements globally and regionally. The PCO should have a track record of building and fostering communication networks and an ability to carry out advocacy work.

The Program and Communication Officer should ideally possess the following professional qualifications and personal attributes:

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A degree in a related field strongly preferred. Medicine, social sciences, law, human rights, political science, women’s studies, degree in mass communications.
  • Relevant and advancing work experience preferred but fresh applicants with a high degree of motivation to learn and work will also be considered.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of global and regional reproductive health and rights issues, including current knowledge about key organizations, policy issues related to healthcare reform, and links to other social movements.
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to express complex ideas in simple language, both orally and in writing.
  • Experience managing social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs at a minimum) with original content generation necessary.

The salary is negotiable based on qualifications and experience.
We maintain a virtual office and working from a home office is encouraged. Part time option could be negotiated with suitable candidates. Young persons are encouraged to apply.
